Windows & Replacement Openings

The right window starts with the opening around it. We’ll help you choose the look and operation you want, then plan how the new window will fit, seal and finish into your home.

Insert or full-frame? Start with what stays.

“Replacement window” can describe a product or the whole project. It doesn’t tell you what comes out. Your proposal should name the installation method and explain what happens to the existing frame, trim and finished opening.

An insert fits inside a suitable existing frame. It can preserve more trim and reduce disruption, but the frame and water-management details need to be sound. You’re adding a frame inside a frame, so compare the finished glass area and sightlines.

Full-frame replacement removes the old window assembly more completely so the rough opening can be checked. That gives us access to frame damage, insulation gaps and flashing, and usually means more trim and finish work. We’ll explain the removal limits rather than assume the surrounding wall needs rebuilding.

Insert replacement fits a new window inside a sound existing frame; full-frame replacement removes the old window frame to expose the structural rough opening.

Match the material to the way you live

Traditional wood: Painted exteriors, brickmould and divided lights can help keep an older home’s character. Plan for the care its exterior finish needs.

Vinyl: A practical, low-maintenance option. Compare the actual frame, glass, colors and operating styles—not just the material name.

Fiberglass: Different collections pair a fiberglass exterior with different interior choices. An all-fiberglass window and a fiberglass-exterior window with a wood interior are worth looking at separately.

Aluminum-clad wood: Real wood inside with cladding outside. These collections often offer more design and finish choices. Our Windsor selection focuses on clad-wood products.

The collection matters as much as the material. Look at frame proportions, finishes, operation and upkeep together. More customization can be useful, but you may not need it in every room.

Window operating styles: single-hung, double-hung, slider, picture, casement and awning, with plan views of bay and bow window projections.

Choose how it opens, then try the hardware

Slide: Double-hung windows have two moving sashes; single-hung windows have one. Gliders move sideways. Check how the sash and screen work before choosing the style.

Swing: Casements hinge at the side; awnings hinge at the top and open outward. Hoppers hinge at the bottom and tilt inward. Allow room for the opening sash, and close windows when weather calls for it.

Frame the view: Picture windows stay fixed. Arches, circles and other specialty shapes add character; transoms sit above a door or another window. Pair fixed glass with operating windows where you want ventilation.

Project outward: A bay typically combines three windows at angles; a bow uses several panels to form a gentler curve. Garden windows create a smaller projecting space. Plan support, roof or head details, insulation and the finished seat—not just the glass.

Know the older options: Glass block and jalousie louvers are different systems from today’s typical replacement windows. Storm panels add a separate layer to an existing window. We’ll assess the whole opening before recommending what stays. Skylights need a roof-and-flashing plan of their own.

Try the lock, handle and screen. Think about reach, cleaning and everyday use. Before changing a bedroom window’s size or style, we’ll check the applicable opening and safety requirements.

Make the glass numbers useful

U-factor tells you about heat transfer; a lower number means less heat passes through the rated assembly. Solar heat gain coefficient describes how much solar heat gets in. Visible transmittance describes daylight. Compare the ratings for the actual window and glass package you’re considering.

The right balance depends on the room, sun and shade. We’ll talk through comfort, daylight and appearance together. More panes or a different coating should answer a real need, not just add another feature to the list.

Where is the condensation?

Start by finding the moisture. On the room side, indoor humidity, glass temperature and air movement all play a part. Between sealed panes, it points to a different question about the glass unit. Outside condensation is different again. Note when it appears and where it sits so we can discuss the right next step.

Compare the finished opening

Look beyond the price per window. Your proposal should explain the installation method, flashing, exterior trim, interior finish, insulation, screens and hardware, plus cleanup and warranty responsibilities. Be clear about which existing details will stay. You should be able to picture the room and the outside of your home when the work is done.

Real windows. Different problems.

Open casement: Deteriorated wood is visible beneath the glass. Exterior cladding can hide the wood behind it, so we inspect the sash, frame and surrounding opening before recommending the repair.

Corner close-up: An open joint is a reason to look closer, not an automatic verdict on the whole window. We check how far the damage goes and which surrounding materials are still sound.

These examples show window conditions, not proof of hail damage. An on-site inspection helps separate impact damage from deterioration.

Sometimes the sash—the panel holding the glass—can be replaced without replacing the whole frame. That depends on the brand, age, configuration and available parts. We’ll check the frame and water-management details, confirm parts availability, and compare sash repair with insert or full-frame replacement.
