Re-roofing is a useful time to evaluate an existing skylight or plan a new source of daylight. The product, roof pitch, flashing system, opening and interior shaft all need to work together before the new roof goes on. Planning the work together helps avoid disturbing a newly finished roof later.
Start with the room. Think about where you want daylight, how the sun moves across the space and whether glare or privacy makes a shade important. Ceiling shape and the distance between the roof and room affect the shaft and the work inside. A kitchen, hallway and bedroom may call for different solutions.
Choose the operation. Fixed skylights bring in daylight without opening. Venting models add an opening for fresh air; controls and power options depend on the selected model. Plan the roof connection. Match the skylight, mounting method and flashing to the roof pitch and roofing material. The opening, surrounding deck and water-management details need review together. An existing leak or stain deserves an inspection; replacing only the visible unit may leave another problem unresolved.
Include the inside work. Confirm whether the proposal covers framing changes, shaft insulation and air sealing, drywall, trim and paint. Identify shades, controls and any electrical work separately so the finished room is part of the plan—not a surprise after the roof work.
Read the coverage. Product, glass, accessories and installation can have different warranty terms. Confirm the selected system’s eligibility, installation requirements and exclusions in the current written warranty. Keep the model information and project documents for maintenance or future service.
